A field trip, some rain, and a trip to the store

We went on a field trip to a reforestation organization called Double Harvest. We piled all the kids, teachers, nurses, and the missions teams from Washington and Biola in the black truck and the white truck. The white truck has a sort of enclosed bed with benches and essentially a cage around it. The ride was rough, and I battled some carsickness from the bumpiness of the road and the exhaust from other cars (clearly Haitians aren't required to get their cars smogged). Double Harvest is all about sustainability and they showed us many of the projects they are currently working on. We cancelled the afternoon electives and enjoyed some good teacher bonding comparing bug bites, talking about the heat, and thinking about the food we want to eat when we all get home. The food is really good, by the way. Last night we had chicken stirfry, rice, and a salad.

A few of us went to the store this afternoon to buy treats for the kids since they behaved so well on the field trip. On the way there, we were pulled over by the Haitian police. Actually, they were standing on the road and motioned us over. There were three officers. One wore a medical mask, one had a very large firearm, and the other had on a bullet proof vest. Interesting. They checked for registration and insurance, and they had a concern about the registration. The certificate said that the truck was green and beige, and clearly it IS, but they were doubting the beige color. Color blind??? We sat and waited for Fritz to come talk to the officers. After they talked for what seemed like forever, some money was exchanged, and we were on our way. In the midst of this the sky opened up and poured cool water all over us! The temperature is pretty nice still.

After our diversion, we arrived at Eagle Market and went down all the aisles and selected items to put in our basket. I found many of the treats from home and purchased a few things including an ice-cold soda. The store is airconditioned which is a HUGE treat. I spent almost $1,300 gouds which I think is a little over $30. The trip home from the store was much quicker than the way there and there were no police involved, thanks God!

Today is Oline's birthday, Paula and Lexie's last night (so sad), so I think we might have some celebrating to do. Tomorrow we're back at school, and I'm going to start working with the first grade students who need some extra help.

We moved our mattresses to the porch last night and went commando (without mosquito nets, that is), and I'm hoping for some more good sleep. Bon nuit!
